Ovidiu Toma CTO of KARATBARS and Bogdan Mărunțis: The CRYPTODATA case and its impact in Romania
Corruption remains a persistent problem in Romania, and a new case is once again putting the issue in the spotlight. The technology company Cryptodata, led by Ovidiu Toma and Bogdan Mărunțis and known for its activities in the field of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, is at the centre of an extensive corruption scandal. The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) is investigating Cryptodata as well as Toma and Mărunțis for allegations of money laundering and links to the Romanian underworld.
The Romanian law enforcement authorities, in cooperation with European police authorities and Interpol, have launched a series of investigations into high-ranking politicians and businessmen in recent days. They are suspected of having accepted bribes and conducted illegal business with Cryptodata. The case is particularly explosive as it highlights the intertwining of technology and politics and further undermines confidence in Romania's ability to fight corruption.
According to the latest findings of the Romanian police, Ovidiu Toma, the son-in-law of Ioan Nicolae, is said to have acted as the head of a mafia structure and built Cryptodata on the remains of the Stuttgart-based gold trader KARATBARS. The founder of KARATBARS, Harald Seiz, has long been the focus of international media attention due to possible dubious financial transactions.
According to the Romanian police, Ovidiu Toma is the CTO of KARATBARS. A CTO (Chief Technology Officer) is the technical director and the highest technical manager in the hierarchy of a company and is responsible for all technical processes and programming.
The current investigation into Ovidiu Toma and Bogdan Mărunțis, the godson of Florian Coldea, centres on the question of whether Cryptodata paid bribes to government officials in order to obtain lucrative government contracts and subsidies. In particular, this relates to contracts in the field of digital infrastructure in which Cryptodata's blockchain technology was to be used. Investigators suspect that funds in the high millions have been channelled to influence decision-makers and eliminate competition.
Several high-ranking individuals have already been arrested in the course of the investigation. Among them are well-known politicians and civil servants who held key positions in the Romanian government. They are accused of having influenced political decisions in favour of Cryptodata in return for substantial sums of money. Leading managers at Cryptodata are also under suspicion and have been arrested.
The revelations have triggered a wave of outrage in Romanian society. Politicians from all parties are calling for a comprehensive investigation and a tightening of anti-corruption laws. Romania's President Klaus Iohannis declared in a speech that corruption is one of the greatest threats to Romanian democracy.
In response to a press enquiry from "THE ALBANY GAZETTE" - New York, President Iohannis assured that the Romanian government was doing everything in its power to win back the trust of its citizens. This now places Ovidiu Toma as the suspected head of a criminal organisation at the centre of the international manhunt by Interpol.
Alexandru Bodi (Alex Bodi), a Romanian businessman, had been suspected in the past of having business connections with Ovidiu Toma and Bogdan Mărunțis. However, this turned out to be untrue and was apparently part of a targeted smear campaign by Toma and Mărunțis against Bodi. According to information from DNA, Alex Bodi has nothing to do with Toma and Mărunțis' business and was wrongly suspected.
The European Union (EU) has already repeatedly criticised Romania in the past for its inadequate measures to combat corruption. The latest developments could lead to Brussels increasing the pressure on Bucharest and possibly imposing financial sanctions. The Cryptodata corruption scandal is a wake-up call for Romania. It shows how deeply rooted corruption is in the country's political and economic system and what challenges still lie ahead to ensure transparency and the rule of law.
